Maharashtra is currently on alert as Cyclone Shakti, a severe cyclonic storm over the Arabian Sea, continues to intensify. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued warnings for coastal districts including Mumbai, Thane, Palghar, Raigad, Ratnagiri, and Sindhudurg, urging residents and fishermen to take precautionary measures.
Current Status of Cyclone Shakti
Cyclone Shakti has formed in the Arabian Sea and is classified as a Severe Cyclonic Storm. Moving west-southwestwards at 13–18 km/h, the storm is generating strong winds and turbulent sea conditions. IMD reports suggest that the cyclone may recurve east-northeastwards from October 6 onwards and gradually weaken over the sea.
Although the cyclone’s core is unlikely to make landfall in Maharashtra, its wide circulation is expected to influence the state’s weather significantly

Expected Impact on Maharashtra
Heavy Rainfall: The Konkan coast, Mumbai, and parts of Marathwada and Vidarbha are expected to witness heavy to very heavy rainfall over the next few days. Localized flooding in low-lying areas is a concern.
Wind Speed: Coastal regions may experience winds between 45–55 km/h, with gusts reaching up to 65 km/h.
Sea Conditions: The Arabian Sea will remain rough to very rough, making fishing and marine activities dangerous. Fishermen have been strongly advised not to venture into the sea until the situation stabilizes.
Government Response
The Maharashtra government has placed disaster management teams on standby, with district administrations instructed to prepare for possible evacuations if needed. Public advisories stress avoiding unnecessary travel, staying indoors during high winds, and securing outdoor items to minimize risks
